Chennai Corporation Bans New Licences and Renewals for Pit Bull and Rottweiler Breeds
Greater Chennai Corporation bans new and renewed licences for Pit Bull and Rottweiler dogs following a rise in attack incidents; violators face heavy penalties.
In response to a rise in dog attack incidents, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced a ban on the issuance of new licences and renewal of existing licences for Pit Bull and Rottweiler dog breeds within city limits.
The decision was approved through a resolution passed at the GCC monthly council meeting on Friday, December 19, and will come into effect from Saturday. As per the new regulation, residents will no longer be allowed to apply for fresh pet licences or renew existing ones for these two breeds, which the civic body has categorised as aggressive.
The resolution noted that a majority of recent dog attack cases involved Pit Bull and Rottweiler breeds, whose aggressive behaviour has resulted in serious harm to the public. Authorities stated that warnings have already been issued to owners of dogs involved in such incidents.
Strict Penalties and Enforcement
According to the GCC, dog owners found to have newly purchased Pit Bull or Rottweiler dogs, or those keeping the animals without a valid licence, will face a penalty of ₹1 lakh. Civic officials will also conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with the ban.
However, owners who currently possess valid licences for these breeds will be allowed to keep their pets until the licence expires, subject to strict safety regulations.
During this period, it is mandatory for the dogs to be leashed and muzzled in public places. Any violation of these safety norms will attract a fine of ₹5,000 per offence, the civic body warned.
