Research and shock...

Public Eye and the International Baby Food Action Network have sent samples of Nestlé baby food products sold in Asia, Africa and Latin America to a Belgian laboratory for testing.

The government has launched an investigation into Nestle's baby food products after it was found to contain excess sugar. Food safety regulator FSSAI said on Thursday that it is collecting samples of Nestle's Cerelac baby food. FSSAI CEO G Kamalvardhan Rao said the process will take 15-20 days to complete.

In fact, a few days ago, Switzerland's Public Eye and the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN) had said in their report that Nestle adds extra sugar and honey to foods like baby milk and Cerelac sold in countries in Asia and Africa, including India.

  • According to a report by Public Eye and the International Baby Food Action Network, nearly all wheat-based baby foods for babies up to six months sold in Asia, Latin America and Africa contain an average of 4 grams of sugar per bowl (1 serving). Public Eye tested 150 of the company’s products in these countries in a Belgian laboratory.
  • The Philippines had the highest amount of sugar in a single serving, at 7.3 grams. Meanwhile, baby food in Nigeria had 6.8 grams and Senegal had 5.9 grams. In addition, seven of the 15 countries did not report sugar levels in their products.
  • According to the report, Nestle adds an average of 3 grams of sugar to each serving of almost all its baby Cerelac products in India. At the same time, 100 grams of Cerelac sold for children aged 6 months to 24 months contains a total of 24 grams of sugar.
  • The report accuses Nestle of highlighting the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients in its products, but the company is not transparent about the sugar content. According to WHO guidelines, sugar or sweeteners should not be used in meals for children under 3 years of age.

What are the sugar standards in India? According to a report in The Indian Express, there is no upper limit on the amount of sugar in baby food in India. The body that monitors this only states the requirements for protein, fat and carbohydrates and micronutrients like vitamins C, D, iron and zinc.

According to Indian regulations, corn syrup and malt can be used in cereal baby food. Sucrose and fructose are used as carbohydrate sources, provided their content is less than 20% of the carbohydrate.

Just as European baby products were sugar-free , Nido powdered milk sold for newborns contained an average of 2 grams of sugar per bottle. On the other hand, similar products sold in Nestle's home country of Switzerland or in European countries such as Germany, Britain and France were sugar-free.
